What causes Hair Edges to break off?

  • Wearing tight hair styles such as braids, high ponytails and hair buns.
  • Heavy manipulation as in over brushing.
  • Utilizing hair products that have alcohol as an ingredient will over dry your hair and increase the chances of breakage.
  • The heat from dryers, flat irons or other heating tools.
  • Sew in Weaves, Lace Fronts and Braids.
  • The lack of conditioning and moisturizing.
  • Chemicals from relaxers/hair straighteners
  • Anything that cause friction to your hair and doesn't allow it to breathe.

Are You Seeing Bumps on Edges from Braids?

If you're feeling any tension or pulling on your hair edges when you're getting your hair braided or in a weave that is not a good sign. Seeing bumps or redness appearing on your hairline and experiencing a headache are all signs that your braids are to tight. Let your stylist know immediately so they can loosen your braids. It can be uncomfortable to tell your stylist that they need to loosen your braids because they are the experts however if want to keep your edges healthy you have got to speak up and learn to have healthy communication with your stylist.

Do Wig Caps Cause Hair Breakage?

Your hair needs oxygen and when you wear a wig or lace front plus a wig cap underneath you are not allowing your hair to breathe. This also means without knowing it you are cutting off blood circulation to your scalp which restricts your hair from growing. So research and find a wig cap that does not create tension to your hair edges and that also allows your hair to breathe and retain moisture.

Does a Lace Front Damage Edges?

  • A lace front that does not fit your head properly and is to tight or to loose can cause your wig to move around and create friction to your hair and result in hair breakage.
  • The comb piece attachment that helps to keep your lace front in place can cause friction to the hair which can result in serious breakage to the hair line as well. So if you must use comb pieces place them strategically so they will not cause any breakage.
  • The solution that you use to remove the glue from your hairline can get on your hair edges and make them dry and brittle which will result in breakage. Find a solution that doesn't contain alcohol or any ingredients that dry the hair out.

Does Wearing a Head Wrap Protect Your Broken Hair Edges?

Wearing or wrapping your hair at night with a silk/satin head scarf, a satin lined bonnet or sleep cap and sleeping on a satin/silk pillow case will protect your hair from breakage. Any fabric other than satin or silk will absorb all your hair's natural oil and moisturizer and yes, that definitely means those edges as well. Friction from a cotton pillow will certainly result in breakage.

Can protective styles cause you to lose your edges?

You may not know this but, you can lose your edges to a protective style if you do not tend to them or if the style is too tight. If you have breaking edges, thinning edges or even healthy edges, here are a few tips to help maintain the goodness of them and promote growth.
  • Limit protective styles/use of hair extensions.
  • If you get protective styles/make sure to ask that your edges be left out.
  • Pulling causes a lot of tension, causing your baby hairs to break off, so ensure to be gentle with your edges at all times.

Should I moisturize my edges before bed?

Massage your edges with essential oils and natural moisturizers before bed. The oils and moisturizers protect and strengthen your hair and increase blood circulation. Massage your edges with the essential oils and moisturizers of your chose and wrap your hair with silk/satin head wrap and sleep away knowing your edges are being cared for.

Is heat good for my edges?

Stay away from heat. Like I have mentioned before, your edges are the most delicate hairs on your head, heat tools will definitely fry them. If your edges are breaking off or thinning, just take a break from the heat.  If you must use heat, turn it down and use it less.

Does having a set diet promote hair growth?

You are what you eat. Fill your diet with vitamins and nutrients, and most importantly, water. Your hair and your edges need them to promote growth and maintain strength.
